Tips for the LNAT

A common myth about aptitude tests is that students cannot prepare for them because there is a lack of a set syllabus or past papers. While it is true that there is no way of knowing which particular articles will be appearing, or what exactly the questions will be asking, there are ways to improve.

Below are three tips students should abide by when preparing for the LNAT.
Tip #1 - Be well-read
Having a greater knowledge and understanding of diverse topics builds a student’s vocabulary, particularly terminology which might not have been covered in school.
Essays which contain more than just standard AP, IB or A-Level curriculum are more likely to consider topics from a different angle, which gives greater depth to responses.
Tip #2 - Practice writing LNAT essays
The LNAT essay is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their ability to reason and persuade a stranger of their position in a maximum of 750 words- without facts to rely on.
If an essay without material content were submitted to the AP, IB or A- Level the student would likely fail so most are not familiar with this type of writing.
It is imperative that students practice responding to hypothetical situations without prior research, as this is what a university interview would require as well.
Tip #3 - Build Stamina
Concentration is an underrated skill in this day and age.
95 minutes of multiple choice in Section A followed by 40 minutes of essay writing in Section B is what is required of students.
Although this appears to fit in with a standard exam paper (if a little on the long side), the experience is quite different when critical thinking is involved.
Students must not only power through the multiple choice, they must also produce a great essay after 95 minutes of mental strain.
